The Close at Rugby

2023 marks the celebration of the 200th anniversary of rugby football!

200 years ago William Webb Ellis caught the ball in his arms and ran with it while playing football on the UK’s Rugby School’s field known as The Close. To celebrate this historic occasion players of all ages, nationalities and abilities will have the chance to play the game where it all began.

One school from each rugby playing nation on the planet is invited, Michaelhouse have the privilege to be that school from South Africa to participate in the seven-a-side festival. They are sending a touring party of 15 players across for this momentous occasion.

The pool games take place at Rugby School on Saturday 25th March, with the knockouts the following day on the 26th March. They will be cheered on by a large group of Old Boys based in the UK, thus the boys are looking forward to an army in red, possibly more than a 100 strong to be there to support them on the touchlines.

With UK known for its cooler weather around this time of the year the team could be in for some chilly playing conditions.
