St Charles College Sports Report

Cricket versus Kearsney

It was an accomplished cricket performance by the Saints First XI on Saturday against Kearsney College. Winning the toss and starting solidly with the bat set the tone for the game. Cian Fortmann and Connor Riley had an opening partnership stand of 158 runs. Fortmann went on to record a well-crafted 116 runs in 152 balls, while Riley scored 58 runs. The Blue & Gold 1st XI were lining up to post a formidable total of over 250 runs, but the Kearsney bowlers had other ideas and restricted the home team to a competitive total of 236 for 9 in 50 overs.

Saints came on to bowl and restricted Kearsney to just 156 runs all out. Dedicated matriculant, Tristan Montile, 4 for 39, was the pick of the bowlers. St Charles College won by a convincing margin of 80 runs. Wins such as these have epitomised the Saints grit and determination this season and we look forward to the final fixture of the year this weekend.

Basketball versus Kearsney

St Charles College welcomed Kearsney to the SK arena on the weekend with both teams looking to pick up vital season wins. With the majority of the school teams putting out a stayers team each week, it has been a steep learning curve for many of the youngsters.

Having worked on their full-court pressure, the Saints were keen to implement their press and put the visitors under pressure. While this tactic worked on a few occasions, the energy and rotations from SCC were just not consistent enough and Kearsney generally managed to progress the ball without too many problems. With the offensive pressure being negated, both teams relied heavily on their offensive sets, and while SCC held a small lead throughout most of the game, it was the visitors who were able to execute during the pivotal closing minutes.

Kearsney were able to make their shots down the closing stretch and opened up a narrow lead. Unfortunately, with time running out, St Charles College was forced to foul intentionally. Kearsney were up to this challenge and made some good free throws to ensure that they maintained the lead to hold on for a good away victory, 60 – 53.
