WATER POLO

Kearsney 1st water polo team won the Northwood Knights Stayers Tournament at the weekend.

Kearsney was leading for most of the semi-final, until the third quarter when they were down by two goals. They managed to equalise and take the game to penalties, to eventually win the encounter.

Having lost only two matrics this season put the team in a strong position. Kearsney has never won the tournament previously.

Results:

Kearsney beat Maritzburg College 17-1

Kearsney beat Glenwood 18-3

Kearsney beat Northwood 13-6

Quarter-final: Kearsney beat Reddam House Helderfontein (abandoned due to weather. Kearsney won by default – 7-1 up at end of first quarter before lighning struck)

Final: Kearsney beat Westville Boys’ High 8-6

CRICKET

DHS 1st X1: 158 all out (Yeni 1/32, Browning 2/12)

Kearsney 1st X1: 160/6 (Wiggett 54, De Beer 25)

Kearsney won by 4 wickets

Kearsney won the toss and had little hesitation in putting DHS in to bat. There had been significant rain during the week and the track, although dry and grassy, was certainly going to be challenging to start.

Sandiswa Yeni (1/32 in 10) and Ryan Browning (2/12) bowled well up front and were aided by a superb back up duo of Dylan Wiggett (2/34) and Hayden Bishop (3/24). Only S Pillay (50) and E van den Heever (28) offered some resistance to the excellent bowling and impressive fielding of the Kearsney outfit. DHS were bowled out for 158, which was never going to be enough, although inclement weather was becoming a serious threat.

Kearsney started aggressively with Wiggett (54) and Michael de Beer (25) accumulating runs as quickly as possible as rain threatened. Kearsney lost wickets on the way in their desperation to beat the weather and achieved the target in the 35th over, with six wickets down. J Haverman was the pick of the DHS bowlers, with impressive figures of 3/27 in his 10 overs.

BASKETBALL

Kearsney 1st team lost 44-50 to DHS 1st team

Kearsney hosted DHS over the weekend. The visitors were favourites to win, having won both encounters this season.

Kearsney started slowly and looked lethargic on offence, missing several open shots, while DHS capitalised on some poor defense and led 12-6 after the first quarter.

Kearsney showed some backbone and were able to claw their way back into the game during the second quarter through tough defense and successful open shots. They went into half-time 22-21 up.

DHS came out strongly after half-time, blowing open the game by scoring 20 points to Kearsney’s five. The hosts showed no intensity, giving themselves a mountain to climb in the fourth quarter, by being behind 27-41.

A different Kearsney team emerged from the huddle to start the final quarter and were able to claw their way back into the game. It was not enough, however, despite winning the quarter 17-9, and they lost the game 44-50.

Top Performers:
