Kearsney's Mvelo Mkhize in the game against St Charles

Kearsney College sports news kicks off with their Soccer match on Saturday against St Charles. The game on Saturday started with Kearsney getting a quick breakaway which Mvelo Mkhize slotted into St Charles’ goal. Whilst St Charles were still recovering, he lobbed the St Charles keeper from a distance, to give Kearsney a 2-0 lead.

Shortly before half-time, Simnene Khubeka scored a penalty when a player was brought down inside the box.

In the second half, St Charles came out firing and scored two quick goals, one an absolute cracker from striker Kwanele Nqayi, to make for an interesting remainder of the game with the scoreline at 2-2.

Both sides continued to attack in an endeavour to gain dominance. Kearsney scored to go 4-2 up, but St Charles never gave up. They almost scored another goal when Kearsney’s goalkeeper took too long to release the ball, but Kearsney had their whole team defend the situation and held onto the win for a very entertaining game of football.

HOCKEY

Kearsney College Grade 12 pupil and 1st team hockey captain Matthew Mendes de Oliveira has been selected for the South African U21 team, an outstanding achievement for a schoolboy. The team will play in the senior Inter-provincial tournament in September, in preparation for the Junior African Cup of Nations.
