For the first time in a decade, a new name emerges at the pinnacle of the Girls First Team School Hockey Rankings, ending Oranje Meisies’ ten-year reign as the country’s dominant force. Eunice, their fierce rivals and neighbors, have steadily improved over the years, and in 2023, they’ve finally dethroned the longstanding champions to claim the coveted No.1 spot.
The journey to the top was no easy feat. Entering the Super 12 Tournament, Eunice understood that to secure the coveted No.1 rank, they had to triumph over not just Oranje on their home turf, but also face fierce competition from challengers like Paarl Gim, Rhenish, and St Mary’s Waverley. Eunice not only defeated Oranje but clinched the Super 12 title in an exhilarating 8-second shootout against Paarl Gim.
From City League Champions to Super 12 Champions and now the top-ranked school hockey team for 2023, Eunice’s ascent to the pinnacle has been a remarkable journey of determination and skill. A heartfelt appreciation goes to all the coaches for their unwavering passion, the queries, and the submitted results that have contributed to this season’s success.
A final salute to the players who showcased exceptional dedication throughout this outstanding season, putting on a display of remarkable matches. It has been a pleasure compiling the rankings each week, and we extend our gratitude to Oranje Meisies and La Rochelle for their collaboration in hosting two fantastic tournaments based on the rankings. With anticipation, we look forward to the 2024 school hockey season, where the excitement and competition will undoubtedly continue.
