Yet another school rugby season has come and gone and as has become the norm some brilliant rugby has been played across all the age groups.
As is the practice at SA School Sports we have combined all the rankings to produce a Combined Rankings for 2022. These rankings include the First XV’s, U14’s, U15’s and U16’s which serves to illustrate the all-round rugby strength and depth of a school.
At times a school has a fantastic First XV but their teams in the other age groups have not performed as well and that is reflected in these combined rankings. Consistency across all the age groups is key for performing well in this ranking.
However, a few things stand out when we look at the combined rankings.
- Firstly only 20 schools achieved a Top 10 finish in at least 1 of the 4 age groups. This suggests that the bulk of rugby talent still remains with the traditional powerhouses.
- Secondly only 4 schools achieved a Top 10 finish across all four age groups, namely Grey College, Affies, Paarl Gim and Paul Roos Gym. We can read into that what we may, however most would have to admit that the recruiting and structures that exist in these types of schools must be very special to be able to perform at the highest level from Grade 8 through to Grade 12.
- Looking at the Top 20, nine of the team’s hail from the Western Cape, five from Gauteng, four from KZN with the Free State and Eastern Cape represented by one school.
These rankings take into consideration factors such as strength of opposition, margin of victory, margin of loss, losing with 10 points, actual points scored on the field, actual result (W/L/D), home/ away status and others. Each factor allows a team to earn a prescribed amount of bonus points which are ultimately ranking the teams.
For the handful of critics, be gentle and remember as with all rankings surprises and upsets do take place, Japan did beat the Springboks!
All in all, a wonderful season ends with the usual suspects making up the elite rugby schools in the country. However, many schools have made promising inroads and are challenging the traditional powerhouses for their turn in the limelight.
It all should make for a great 2023!
