Meridian Pinehurst learner breaks national athletics record that stood for 18 years!
Grade 5 learner Dylan Calvert from Meridian Pinehurst Primary School in Durbanville has made history at the ASA Sub-Youth National Athletics Championships.
The 11-year-old from Kraaifontein shattered a national record in the under-11 80 m sprint that stood for 18 years, clocking a remarkable 9.84 seconds to secure the gold medal. His performance officially makes him the fastest under-11 athlete in South Africa over this distance.
Dylan has been a standout on the track for the past two seasons. Last year, he excelled in the athletics scene by winning both the 80 m and 100 m finals, establishing himself as a rising sprint sensation. His coaches describe him as dedicated, humble and fiercely competitive – qualities that continue to set him apart.
Reflecting on his achievement, Dylan said he is proud of the result and excited for what lies ahead. His next goal is to keep improving his time as he prepares for future provincial and national competitions.
