For the past 20 years, SA School Sports has proudly produced and refined the school hockey rankings — the original rankings platform in South Africa. What started as a simple way to track results has grown into a trusted, nationwide benchmark for performance, prestige, and progress in the game.
As we launch the 2026 Belgotex Sport First XI Girls Hockey Rankings, we look forward to once again building excitement, debate, and recognition for the outstanding talent and competition that defines school hockey in this country.
How the Rankings Are Calculated
The rankings are built on a proven, data-driven system that rewards performance over time. While the formula behind the scenes is sophisticated, the key principles are simple and fair:
1. Match Results Matter Most
At its core, the system is driven by results.
-
Wins earn valuable points
-
Draws provide smaller returns
-
Losses impact a team’s overall rating
Consistently winning teams will always rise.
2. Strength of Opposition
Not all victories carry the same weight.
Beating a top-ranked team earns significantly more points than defeating lower-weighted opposition. This ensures that teams are rewarded for performing against strong competition — not just accumulating easy wins.
3. Margin of Victory
The system also takes into account how convincingly a team wins or loses.
-
Strong, controlled victories can boost a team’s ranking
-
Narrow losses to top sides are not heavily penalised
- PSO losses are viewed as draws
- PSO wins carry 20% less value than a regulation win
This creates a more accurate reflection of true performance levels.
4. Ongoing Weekly Updates
The rankings are dynamic and evolve throughout the season as new results are added. Every match counts, and movement up or down the table reflects current form — not reputation.
5. Weighting
There is no carry-over from the previous year. Teams begin the season with a weighting influenced by their performances in the previous year, ie where their U16’s and First XI were ranked. This provides early structure to the rankings and a guide to the potential strength of a team, but as the season progresses, current results quickly take over.
More Than Just Rankings — There’s Everything to Play For
These rankings are not just about bragging rights — they carry real consequences.
At stake in 2026 is qualification for two of the premier school hockey tournaments in South Africa, both taking place from 7–10 August 2026:
Oranje Meisies FAIRTREE Super 12
Only the top 12 ranked teams on the SA School Sports Rankings will earn an invitation to this elite tournament — a showcase of the very best schoolgirl hockey talent in the country.

La Rochelle Challengers Cup
Teams ranked 13–25 will qualify for the highly competitive Challengers Cup — a tournament that consistently produces thrilling matchups and rising contenders.

The Race Starts Now
From the very first push-back of the season, every goal, every result, and every performance matters. The cut-off is on the 3rd of June, 2026.
The margins are fine. One big win can launch a team up the table. One upset can change the entire landscape.
And with national recognition and tournament qualification on the line, there is no room for complacency.
The journey to August starts now — and as always, SA School Sports will be there every step of the way, tracking the results, telling the stories, and celebrating the teams that rise to the top.
NB: ONLY TEAMS WITH A MINIMUM OF 3 MATCHES PLAYED ARE DISPLAYING THIS WEEK
