Kearsney College Hockey Sports news
The Kearsney Hockey 5s was a spectacular success, attracting a record 26 teams from boys’ high schools, girls’ high schools and primary schools, and with the hot weekend weather bringing large numbers of supporters.
High quality hockey was on display over the weekend, which was powered by Belgotex Sport. The tournament has entrenched itself as a premier fixture on the South African schools’ hockey calendar, with three divisions this year adding to the excitement.
The boys’ high final was a tough match between Pretoria’s Garsfontein and Hilton College, with the local KZN team winning 3-0. Garsfontein were unbeaten going into the final, after having beaten Hilton 3-2 during the pool stages.
A total of eight boys’ high schools participated this year, including Clifton, Ashton, Hilton, Garsfontein, St Albans, Michaelhouse, Westville Boys and hosts Kearsney College.
In the girls final, between local Durban teams St Mary’s DSG and Danville Park Girls’ High, the latter won after being beaten 5-1 by the same team in the pool stages. When the whistle was blown after full-time, the score was 1-1, taking the game into a deciding penalty shootout. Danville ran out the eventual winners.
The six participating girls’ high schools were Curro, Maris Stella, Ashton, Thomas More, St Marys and Danville.
Young hockey players from 12 primary school teams learned the skills of adapting from the traditional 11-a-side game to the smaller fast-paced 5-a-side version. Those who joined the weekend’s fun were Hillcrest Primary, Bonisanani, Highbury, Atholl Heights, Cowan House, Winston Park, Westville Senior Primary, Ashton, Kloof Senior Primary, Penzance and Treverton Prep.
