GRANT KHOMO

In a decision that has sparked controversy, the Grant Khomo Week final will not feature the anticipated clash between Free State and Western Province on June 29, 2023. Western Province, were deemed ineligible to play in the main match due to alleged non-compliance with SA Rugby’s Strategic Transformation Plan.

The rugby fraternity was left stunned when Western Province’s hard-fought victory against the Blue Bulls was overshadowed by accusations of failing to adhere to transformation targets and quota rules. It is claimed that they fielded two players from the Western Province XV, their second-string team, in lieu of injured players from their original squad. While injuries are a common occurrence in competitive sport, this decision may well raise concerns about fairness and adherence to the regulations.

SA Rugby’s Transformation Plan outlines the objective of having at least 11 players of colour in the match day squad of 23 during youth tournaments. While the importance of transformation cannot be undermined, the decision to exclude Western Province from the final may be viewed as questionable by some. The team has undoubtedly showcased talent, determination, and the ability to compete at the highest level throughout the Grant Khomo Week.

In light of this unexpected turn of events, Free State now prepares to face the Blue Bulls in the final match. While this promises to be an exciting encounter, the absence of Western Province has left a void in the much-anticipated showdown as it will be difficult for some to believe that the best teams are in the final match.
