The curtain has fallen on the 2025 Girls’ First Team School Hockey season, and what a truly unforgettable season it has been! From the very first whistle in March to the final cheer at the Fairtree Super 12, the passion, skill, and pure determination displayed on the turf have left us in awe.
Many will agree – perhaps with a knowing smile – that the standard of hockey this year has reached unprecedented heights. The crispness of the passes, the tactical brilliance, and the unrelenting drive to win have been nothing short of world-class. Those in the know have whispered (and in some cases, proclaimed) that the tournaments hosted under the SA School Sports Hockey Rankings banner have surpassed even the highly respected IPT’s in sheer quality and intensity.
At the heart of this season’s drama was a thrilling battle between two powerhouse schools – Paarl Gim and Rhenish. These two sides locked horns in a year-long tug-of-war, trading places at the summit of the rankings several times and keeping us all glued to the weekly updates. For a brief moment, the spirited DSG Makhanda joined the fray, adding even more spice to an already gripping contest.
In the end, it was Rhenish who held on to the top spot, their strong lead built earlier in the season proving just enough to keep them at No.1 after the dust settled at the Fairtree Super 12. They would not win the most prestigious title in school hockey but they did only conceded 2 goals in the entire tournament which is the lowest in history. Their consistency, discipline, and sheer will to win have once again marked them as the team to beat in South African schoolgirls’ hockey.
But what a story for Paarl Gim! Refusing to be overshadowed, they showed the heart of champions, never once letting go of the dream. That determination came to glorious fruition when they claimed their first-ever Fairtree Super 12 title in emphatic style, overpowering a strong Bloemhof side 4-1 in the final. That victory wasn’t just a trophy—it was a statement. Playing in their 2nd final they became only the 5th school to win the Super 12 title and it was Alanda Rademeyer who was recognised as the top goal scorer with a record 11 goals.
As we close the chapter on 2025, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you and congratulations to every single player who stepped onto the field this year, to the coaches who inspired, the parents who supported, and the loyal supporters who filled the stands with colour, energy, and song. And of course, to the tens of thousands of you who visited the SA School Sports website each week to follow the rankings—you are the heartbeat of this community.
So, as the sticks are packed away and the astro fields fall quiet, we take with us the memories of another magical season. Rest well, recover, and dream big—because when 2026 arrives, we’ll be ready to do it all over again, with the same passion, the same joy, and the same love for the game that makes school hockey in South Africa truly special.
Here’s to hockey. Here’s to you. And here’s to an even greater season ahead.
