Soccer:

Hilton College lost to Kearsney College 1-2

The game started with both teams showing a hunger to win. Kearsney’s defense was well organised and marshalled by captain Asande Nyawose, with his vice Hayden Bishop closing down Hilton’s quick number 7 striker.

Hilton opted to attack the visitors on their left, where Ntsika Shiba put up strong defence, making a good run before passing to Solethu Mdladla.

Fifteen minutes into the game things calmed, before Mdladla shot the ball just past the far post, the opportunity coming from great link up play between Mdladla and Chad Croshaw. Kearsney continued the momentum, becoming even more of a threat in corners and free kicks, and being dangerous in aerial balls but struggling to get it on target.

For the remainder of the half, the Kearsney defenders had to remain focused, as Hilton forwards became a great threat, putting through balls on the ground and over the top and easily piercing through Kearsney’s midfield. Kearsney goalkeeper Siyen Gounden ensured the first half ended goalless.

In the second half both teams were on fire. Kearsney played with composure, a sense of urgency and direction. Ethan Groom and Croshaw controlled the middle of the park, which allowed Lethu Ngidi and James Gillespie freedom to control and attack. Ngidi was troubling Hilton’s players and was marked by two defenders, which opened space for Kearsney.

The visitors were given a free kick in their half, which Croshaw took exceptionally well. Two minutes thereafter, Hilton also received a free kick outside the box, to score a cracker of a goal in the top left corner. This took the score to 1-1.

Kearsney’s hunger pulled through with U15 player Bonga Maphanga hitting hard outside the box to take the score to 2-1.
