Kearsney’s 3rd Annual soccer Tournament is growing!
Almost 600 enthusiastic and talented young soccer players from across the country and as far afield as Botswana are headed to Botha’s Hill for the third annual Kearsney Soccer Tournament next month (July).
Players from 36 teams will gather, from 17 to 19 July, to showcase their skills and enjoy fun and competition over three days during the school holidays.
In two years, the tournament has grown to now include 16 teams from boys’ high schools, eight from girls’ high schools and 12 primary schools’ sides, travelling from across KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Northern Province, the Eastern and Western Cape, as well as Gaborone.
Last year’s winners in the three divisions, Pinetown Boys’ High (senior boys), St Mary’s DSG (senior girls) and Merchiston Prep (junior boys), will be taking part again.
This year other participating boys’ high school teams from KwaZulu-Natal are Durban High School, Glenwood High and Clifton College (Durban), Ashton Ballito and Grace College (Hilton), as well as Queensburgh High, Maqhutshana Secondary, Siyajabula High and hosts Kearsney College (all Highway). Three Gauteng schools taking part are Curro Hazeldean, Sutherland High and Trinity House Randpark; Lebone ll College (Rustenburg), Urban Academy (Gqeberha) and Curro Somerset West (Western Cape).
Joining St Mary’s DSG from Kloof, the girls’ high school teams are Durban Girls’ High and Danville Park Girls (Durban), Crawford La Lucia and Ashton Ballito (North Coast), Curro Hazeldean (Pretoria) and Trinity House Randpark (Randburg).
They will be joined by 12 primary school sides, including Broadhurst Primary from Gaberone in Botswana.
Local teams are Highbury Prep, Hillcrest Primary, Winston Park, Atholl Heights, Westville Senior Primary, John Wesley, Ashton Ballito, Reddam Ballito and Clifton Prep; with last year’s winners Merchiston and Pelham Senior Primary travelling from Pietermaritzburg.
Kearsney headmaster Patrick Lees said these matches allowed young sportspeople the opportunity to meet and interact with new friends; and to make memories and friendships that would last through the players’ school years, tertiary and adult lives.
Following the success of its annual Easter rugby festival, Lees said Kearsney was proud to continue this unique tournament format and to support the development and growth of soccer by boys and girls at school level in South Africa.
SuperSport Schools will live-stream matches. Fixtures and results will be on the Kearsney Events App, which is available on Google Play and iStore.
