Sportsmans Warehouse SA School Sports First XV Rugby Rankings – First Release of 2025
Here we go again! Another thrilling school rugby season is upon us, and with it, the much-anticipated first publishing of the Sportsmans Warehouse SA School Sports First XV Rankings. As always, these rankings will be the source of much celebration for some and quiet (or not-so-quiet) frustration for others as the season unfolds. But one thing is certain—school rugby in South Africa is set for another exciting year!
Compiling these rankings is no small feat. It takes hours of meticulous data analysis and careful consideration to provide a snapshot of the form teams are showing early in the 2025 season. Now in our 19th year of publishing these rankings, we stand by the tried-and-tested formula that has consistently delivered an accurate reflection of school rugby’s landscape. As more matches are played and teams settle into their rhythms, any apparent anomalies will naturally be ironed out, allowing the rankings to evolve into a true representation of performance.
For this initial release, only teams that have played at least two matches have been included. This is, of course, just a small sample of what the season will ultimately bring, but already, the ranking formula has begun to identify the traditional powerhouses of school rugby and positioned them at the upper end of the table.
How Are the Rankings Calculated?
Our ranking system considers several key factors:
- Strength of opposition – Teams are rewarded for playing and defeating stronger opponents.
- Margin of victory or defeat – A close loss to a top team holds more value than a blowout win over a weaker opponent.
- Match results (Win/Loss/Draw) – The ultimate determinant of a team’s position.

The Battle at the Top
Grey College may be in desperate need of a reliable kicker, but they have started as expected, securing the No.1 spot in this opening week. However, the old foes—Paul Roos Gymnasium (PRG), Paarl Gimnasium, and Paarl Boys’ High (Boishaai)—have no doubt noticed a potential chink in the Grey armor. Could this be the year a rare victory over the Bloemfontein giants is on the cards? Time will tell, but one thing is for sure: the chase for the top position is well and truly on!
So, as we embark on another exhilarating school rugby season, enjoy the rankings, but more importantly, enjoy the action on the field. There’s a long road ahead, and plenty of surprises still to come. Let’s see how the season unfolds before losing tempers over rankings—after all, it’s the passion and spirit of school rugby that truly matters!
