SA School Sports Girls’ First Team Hockey Rankings – Weekly Update
In a sport where the margins are razor-thin, this week’s Girls’ First Team Hockey Rankings reflect the ever-changing dynamics of a fiercely competitive season, with some surprise results shaking things up at the top.
Mid-Table merchants, Ashton College delivered one of the week’s most significant upsets, edging past Our Lady of Fatima 1-0 in their Spar Challenge regional final. That solitary goal was enough to cause a slight tremor in the rankings, with OLF slipping several spots after what had been a strong run.
Affies also made their mark, producing a disciplined and determined performance against Paarl Gim. Their goalkeeper was in sublime form, shutting out a relentless Gim attack and ensuring a well-earned win. That result sees Affies climb to 12th in the latest rankings.
But it was Collegiate who faced the toughest weekend fixture list, squaring off against both Bloemhof and top-ranked Rhenish. In a show of grit and determination, Collegiate overcame Bloemhof before sharing the honours in a nail-biting clash with Rhenish, solidifying their status as serious contenders.
Eunice also made a statement, edging Garsfontein 3-2 in a thriller. While they have conceded more goals than nearly every team in the Top 10, which may indicate a potential weakness, their attacking flair—averaging three goals per match—continues to lift them higher on the leaderboard.
The race to qualify for the two prestigious national tournaments is now truly on! Remember, the Top 12 teams on the SA School Sports Rankings will earn their place at the Oranje Meisies Super 12 Tournament, while positions 13-24 will be invited to compete in the exciting Rising Champions Cup hosted by La Rochelle.
