PMB Girls’ High School Athletes Shine Across Multiple Sporting Codes

Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School is proud to share recent excellent sporting achievements from our girls, with swimmers, hockey players, netballers, and volleyball teams representing the school at prestigious tournaments across the country during the holidays. There were also standout individual performances in both shooting and bowls. In addition, term 2 has seen some very good performances from our hockey and netball teams.

Swimming: A Wave of Medals

PMB Girls’ High School swimmers delivered exceptional performances at the Durban championships during the holidays:

  • Talia Luridsamy (14) claimed four gold medals and three silver medals at Level 1, setting multiple personal bests.
  • Mayra Singh (14) secured two golds, two silvers, and a bronze at Level 2, including a standout victory in the 100m butterfly.
  • Kristen Burt (16) dominated Level 3 with three gold medals and a bronze in relay
  • Cailyn Clowes (15) earned a bronze medal in the 400m
  • Zekhethelo Radebe (13) impressed with two golds and a silver, breaking personal records in breaststroke events

Hockey: Competing Against the Best

The school’s hockey teams faced tough competition at national festivals during the recent holidays:

  • U14A Team secured a very good victory against Voortrekker Bethlehem (6–4).
  • U16A Team recorded wins against Thomas More and Hillcrest, finishing 21st
  • 1st Team achieved three wins, including against Clarendon High and Penryn, placing 24th out of 32

Over the past weekend the hockey teams delivered a string of impressive results:

  • Against Howick High School GHS secured victories across all age groups, including a commanding 3–1 win by the 1st Team.
  • Facing Witteberg High School, the U14A and U16A teams fought valiantly despite narrow defeats, while the 1st Team secured a 2–0 victory, underscoring their consistency.
  • At the Wartburg Hockey Festival, the 2nd Team displayed resilience with three consecutive draws before conceding narrowly to Grace College.

Netball: Rising Stars

The U15A Netball Team impressed at the St Mary’s Waverley Tournament during the holidays, winning four matches and reaching the quarter-finals.

Several players earned District Team Selections, including:

  • U13: Asenayo Shezi
  • U14: Ndimenhle Khanyile, Senzelumusa Khumalo
  • U17: Esethu Zimu, Ongeziwe Zulu, Amahle Mndakane
  • U18: Melokuhle Hlongwane, Anelisa Ndlela

Over the past weekend, our girls displayed determination on the courts:

  • Against Alex High School, GHS secured emphatic wins across junior divisions, with the U14A and U14B teams recording overwhelming scorelines of 28–1 and 29–0
  • At the Wartburg Netball Festival, the 2nd Team advanced to the finals after notable wins against Waterfall College, Grace College, and Carter High Despite a spirited effort, they fell short in the final against Wartburg Kirchdorf School.

Bowls: Outstanding Performance

Isla Dunlop (Grade 8) recently represented Natal Inland district at the SA Junior Bowls competition held in Bloemfontein during the school holidays, and was selected to play in the club singles competition this weekend. She is the youngest bowler in Maritzburg Bowling Club competing against adults, and has already won several titles.

Shooting

Divya Naido delivered an outstanding shooting performance, scoring 471 in 3P and 420 in 10m recent competitions, securing 1st place overall in the U16 Sporter category.

Table Tennis: National Ranking Glory

The PMB GHS table tennis players shone on the national stage, bringing home an impressive medal haul across four ranking tournaments:

  • Gold medalists included Nitara Totaram, Veya Pillay, and Kritika Totaram, who each secured multiple top podium finishes in singles and doubles categories.
  • Silver and bronze medals were earned by Sivarna Sivnannan, Keona Pillay, Nevadya Rampersadh, and Akshara Parbhoodeen, highlighting the depth of talent in the squad.
