The final whistle has blown for the 2022 School Rugby Season and what a season it has been!
Each week’s hundreds of well-trained teams have taken to the fields around the country and shown just why schoolboy rugby in South Africa is arguably the finest in the world.
With the close of the season comes the final First XV Rankings for 2022 which hopefully tries to paint a picture of the overall form of the various team.
Garsfontein tripped on their final hurdle last week when they went down narrowly to Monument. It has been a great season for Garsies with wins over Affies and PRG to their credit, but the losses to Monnas causes them to slip out of the top 5 and finish on 6th position for 2022.
In the ‘Battle of the Farmers’ it was Oakdale who got the better of Boland Landbou and it is a win that see’s Oakdale climb back up to a respectable 13th spot on the table.
Wyberg took care of business against SACS which helps to see them finishing the 2022 season in the top 10 Zone. Bishops however slump down to 18th following their loss to Rondebosch.
Of course, it is the top of the table that most will look and perhaps question. All the teams in the top 5 have lost matches to each other but based on all the factors that the formula uses it is Paarl Gim who takes the No.1 position this year followed by Grey College who succumbed to both Paarl Gim and PRG during the season. What separates these teams is miniscule and as they have all shown on the day any one of them can beat the other.
To all the fantastic school rugby supporters, the coaches who have spent hours training their teams and to the players for producing such tremendous entertainment we thank you!
Although the final rankings will not be to the liking of some, we are buoyed by all the support that floods in from parents, coaches, MIC’s and others. Enjoy the break and we look forward to the 2023 season!
