Cricket: St David’s Marist Fasken Time Cricket Festival – Day 1 Wrap up

There was no sign of rain in Johannesburg on Thursday – day one of the St David’s Marist Fasken Time Cricket Festival, but it was pouring runs.

The conditions certainly favoured the batsmen. The sun was shining, the wickets, for the most part, were flat and the outfields were dry and fast. And the batters responded by notching up five centuries and no fewer than 11 half centuries. Compare that to the last time this two-day festival was held, in 2019, when there were three tons in all over the four days.

Top score of the day went to St Stithians’ Ruben du Toit, who smashed 146 against the Lions Invitation team. He faced 122 balls and hit five fours and 10 sixes. As impressive was Ruan Strauss of Noordheuwel, who was 122 not out against St Andrew’s (121 balls, 10 4s, four 6s). The other three tons were scored in the morning. TJ Chalmers of St John’s made 104 against Clifton (102 balls, 12 4s and five 6s), Jordan Gamsy of the host school, got 105 (177 balls, 13 4s) against Paul Roos Gimnasium and Christopher King was 100 not out (118 balls, 13 4s, one 6) for St John’s against Clifton.

Four of the half centuries were big ones. Beukes van der Berg got 96 for Waterkloof against Jeppe; Jonathan van Zyl made 91 for Maritzburg College against KES; Aditya Kumar of St David’s was 79 not out against Paul Roos and Josh van Tonder of Paul Roos made 88 against St David’s.
