For nearly two decades, SA School Sports has taken on the challenging task of ranking the Top Boys’ Sports Schools, and we are thrilled to bring you the 2025 edition! The competitive spirit in school sports continues to grow, and these rankings are designed to provide a clear and as fair as possible reflection of sporting excellence across South Africa. As always, we know these rankings will spark debate — some will cheer, others may disagree — but after 19 years of curating these lists, we are well-prepared for lively discussion.
Including Athletics for the First Time
This year marks an important evolution in our rankings: for the first time, Athletics has been fully incorporated into our calculations, based on final placings in the Curro Podium Series. Historically, schools that excelled in Athletics but did not offer sports such as Basketball, Water Polo, or Football were underrepresented in our overall rankings. By including Athletics, we ensure that schools demonstrating excellence on the track and field are fairly recognized alongside other major codes.
How We Rank
The 2025 Boys’ Sports Rankings now include seven sports: Rugby, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Water Polo, Basketball, and Athletics. Our methodology remains rigorous, taking into account:

Strength of opposition – ensuring results are contextualized against the quality of competition.

Actual results – wins, losses, and draws.

Margins – victories and defeats are measured to reward dominance or resilience.
Weightings reflect both tradition and participation levels:

Double Weighting for Rugby – Recognized as the most popular boys’ school sport, rugby continues to carry extra weight.

1.5 Weighting for Cricket, Hockey, and Football – These sports have significant participation and interest, so their influence is amplified accordingly.

Original Values for Basketball, Water Polo, and Athletics – While Athletics is new to our rankings, its inclusion follows the original value system used for these smaller codes to ensure balance.
Scope & Limitations
These rankings focus on the seven sports for which SA School Sports generates consistent performance data. While other sports such as Swimming, Tennis, Rowing, or Golf are valuable in their own right, they are not included due to the absence of comprehensive metrics. This means that schools excelling solely in these areas may not see that reflected in their overall position. Hopefully in time more sports will be added in the years to come.
A Holistic Evaluation
Our rankings reward schools that demonstrate consistency across all designated sports rather than excellence in a single discipline. Some schools may dominate a particular sport but rank lower overall due to less consistent performance in other codes. This approach provides a fair, nuanced reflection of overall sporting strength.
