Thrilling Battles on Day 3 at the U16 Top Schools Hockey Tournament: Rain, Drama, and Determination

The U16 Top Schools Tournament hosted by Paarl Gimnasium experienced a dramatic twist as rain played its part in delaying the semi-finals on Saturday. However, the journey to the semi-finals was filled with intense competition and unexpected outcomes.

Boys Tournament Recap:

Grey High School had already secured their semi-final spot before their final group game on Saturday morning. They carried this momentum into a decisive victory over the host, Paarl Gimnasium, setting up a semi-final clash with Paul Roos. Paul Roos kept their hopes alive with a superb 3-0 win over Parel Vallei, which, along with a draw between Michaelhouse and Menlopark, paved the way for their advancement.

Parel Vallei joined them in the semi-finals, despite a defeat to Paul Roos, thanks to a crucial 1-0 win over Grey College. They were set to face Northwood, who secured their spot with a victory against Outeniqua, needing only a draw to advance.

Unfortunately, the rain rendered the turf unplayable, postponing the Parel Vallei vs. Northwood semi-final to Sunday morning at 09:00. However, the other semi-final between Grey High School and Paul Roos went ahead, with Paul Roos delivering a surprising 3-1 victory. Luc Botha and PG Groenewald led the charge for Paul Roos, with Groenewald scoring twice, ensuring their place in the final.

Girls Tournament Recap:

In the Girls tournament, Paarl Gimnasium secured their semi-final spot with a goalless draw against Herschel, needing to avoid a 2-goal defeat. Menlopark also progressed from Pool A, remaining undefeated with three draws. A goalless match against Oranje ensured their progression.

Pool B saw Collegiate earn a semi-final berth against Menlopark, finishing top of their pool with an impressive final surge. They defeated St. Mary’s DSG 1-0 and then table-toppers Garsfontein 3-0, clinching the top spot. Garsfontein’s hopes were dashed by Reddam House Constantia, who claimed a 1-0 victory to secure their semi-final spot based on goals scored.

Reddam and Paarl Gimnasium were able to play their semi-final before the rain, with Paarl Gim securing a place in the final thanks to Alanda Rademeyer’s brace, despite an equalizer from Emma Hibberts. Meanwhile, Collegiate and Menlopark’s match was postponed due to the waterlogged pitch and will determine the other finalist on Sunday morning at 08:00.

The stage is set for an exciting conclusion to the U16 Top Schools Tournament, where grit, skill, and determination will determine the champions.
