His focus lies in developing sustainable programmes, strong participation pathways and a culture in which students are encouraged to compete with confidence, resilience and purpose
.
Mr Rudman says, “As a young co-educational school, we have consistently punched above our weight by choosing to compete, to challenge ourselves, and to back our belief.”
Steyn City School is making its mark in the sporting landscape, and it has been deeply rewarding to witness this journey unfold. As a relatively young and small co-educational school, we have consistently challenged established programmes through commitment, vision and a willingness to step into competitive spaces. Our approach has always been clear: seek opportunity, embrace challenge and grow through experience.
While cricket has attracted much of the spotlight, it represents only one part of a far broader sporting narrative. Across swimming, chess, water polo, equestrian, football, esports, hockey, netball, tennis, golf and mountain biking, Steyn City School students continue to demonstrate excellence, consistency and ambition across a growing range of sporting disciplines.
As a future-focused and progressive school, we recognise that competitive sport continues to evolve. Esports reflects many of the same attributes valued across traditional sport — strategy, teamwork, discipline and performance under pressure – and its inclusion within our programme aligns with our commitment to relevance and student engagement.
Beyond cricket, success across other disciplines has been equally compelling. Swimmers have delivered outstanding performances, breaking records and securing medals at both provincial and national level, while water polo has developed into a highly competitive programme that consistently challenges established schools. Equestrian athletes continue to distinguish themselves through exceptional skill, discipline and sportsmanship, and our tennis programme has produced players competing with distinction at national and international level.
Golf and mountain biking have also emerged as areas of notable growth. Through close collaboration with Steyn City Properties, students benefit from access to world-class golf facilities and an extensive trail network, allowing these programmes to develop within a truly unique performance environment. Across all sporting disciplines, students are increasingly achieving representative honours, podium finishes and selection for elite pathways – clear indicators of the depth, quality and momentum of Steyn City School’s sporting programme.
“Our philosophy has always been simple: play whenever opportunities arise, test ourselves against strong opposition, and learn from every experience.”
Our state-of-the-art facilities provide an environment in which students can train, compete and grow with confidence. These include a dedicated cricket oval and pavilion, an equestrian arena, multi-court spaces, and an exceptional Aquatic Centre featuring an indoor, heated Learn to Swim pool alongside an indoor 25 m × 25 m heated pool used for swimming training, galas and water polo. The sporting landscape is further enhanced by a floodlit hockey AstroTurf and three additional sports fields.
We continue to pursue fixtures against established schools at both Preparatory and College levels, using these opportunities to benchmark progress, test our systems and ensure continuous improvement as the school grows. Our cricket programme, in particular, has delivered consistent results across multiple age groups, competing strongly within Gauteng and against touring schools from across the country.
Recent rankings published by SA Schools Sport provide helpful context for this progress. In the most recent available school cricket rankings, the First Team is placed sixteenth nationally, while the U15 side was ranked seventeenth in the previous update, and the U14 team ranked second in the country.
While rankings offer only a snapshot, often influenced by weighted results from previous seasons, they remain a useful benchmark. When viewed alongside performance trends, participation growth and development opportunities, they highlight the steady upward trajectory of Steyn City School’s cricket programme.
One of the defining moments in our sporting journey was watching Karabo Meso lead Steyn City School to the inaugural Schools SA20 title, scoring an unbeaten 117 runs. Her progression, alongside alumni such as Oluhle Siyo, Jenna Evans, Sarah Nettleton and Diara Ramlakan, now competing at senior provincial level, reflects the strength of our development pathways and our long-term commitment to nurturing talent.
At the heart of all of this is a strong sense of family and belonging. Whether on the field or off it, students know they are part of a connected community where they are supported, encouraged and valued.
“What excites me most is that this journey is only beginning.”
Steyn City School continues to build a sporting culture grounded in opportunity, challenge and belief. For aspiring young athletes seeking an environment that supports ambition while developing the whole individual, it is a school that deserves attention.
