CRICKET

kearsney cricketHeavy hitters Westville batted first on a track which offered seam some turn and decent carry.  They made a slow start in the powerplay and were restricted to a modest 119/4 (Romashen Pillay 37).

Kearsney passed the total with 2 down and 4 overs to spare (Hayden Bishop 38*, Michael de Beer 31*). It was an excellent win for Kearsney against a very competent Westville outfit.

Kearsney College 1st XI v DHS 1st XI in a 50 Over game

DHS: 81 all out 29th over (Browning 3/6, Coetzee 3/10)

Kearsney: 82/1 (Bishop 41*)

Kearsney won by 9 wickets

Inexplicably DHS batted first on a difficult track which was affected by a torrential downpour on Friday night.  They were bundled out for 81, with only Mthembu offering resistance with a tough 20. Ryan Browning bowled with pace and bounce for his 3/6 up front and Ross Coetzee did further damage with his off-spinners (3/10).

The hot sun and wind flattened out the track as the day progressed and captain Hayden Bishop 41* and Cameron Veenstra 28* ensured a Kearsney victory by 9 wickets. It was a clinical win, but DHS’s decision to bat first on a track which favoured the bowlers played a major role in the result.

BASKETBALL

Kearsney 1st team beat DHS 1st team 60-44

Kearsney travelled to Durban to face old rivals DHS on a blisteringly hot day. Kearsney started well and found some rhythm on offence, but as the quarter progressed DHS’ relentless pressure on defence as well as the heat, caused a gradual decline in Kearsney’s scoring. As substitutes were brought in, things began to flounder. The quarter ended with both teams on 11 points.

Kearsney’s bench players who came on in the second quarter played well and it was possible to rest the starters which proved decisive, as DHS did not have the same luxury. Kearsney went into half-time being 24-15 in front.

While DHS made a strong push in the third quarter, Kearsney’s rested starters were able to hold them off and continue scoring freely despite some careless errors.

They were in a strong position at the start of the fourth quarter, being up 38-30, they pulled away in the fourth quarter and ended up winning 60-44. The game provided some much needed time for the bench players.

GOLF

Kearsney’s 1st golf team played in the recent KZN Golf Union’s event at Kloof. There was some great golf with Kearsney finishing in 4th place with the best team score for the afternoon round.

This event also served as trials for the KZN Southern Coastal teams. Kearsney is proud of golfers Reece Brown who ranked number 1 in the team, as well as Tyron Keylock, Matthew Gouws and Luc Michael Jonker for their selections.
