Sports News: Wrap up of the Wynberg Rugby Festival

The Standard Bank Wynberg Rugby Festival welcomed over 2200 players to 91 fixtures over 4 days on the Wynberg Boys’ High School fields, bringing all the action and high-octane excitement of the first major rugby event of the new season.

With a great spread of sides ranging from private schools to grassroots teams, it was a pleasure to host St Charles and Clifton from KZN, Noordkaap from Kimberley, Oakdale from Riversdale, Tsumeb from Namibia, and Worcester Gym.

A big thanks too, to our local teams for their support: SACS, Bishops, Rondebosch, Jan van Riebeeck, Somerset College, Bergvliet, Edgemead, Parel Vallei, Langa RFC, Melkbosstrand, Sakumzi Academy, Bellville Tech High, Hamiltons RFC, Hermanus High, Curro Delft, Wynberg Boys’ Junior, SSDP (School Sports Development Program), Bastion, and Marvin Park

This Festival is much more than just the 1st XV clashes, it’s about growing the game here in the Western Cape, and if our increasing numbers at this event, and the quality of rugby on display are anything to go by, Wynberg is on track as a rugby development arm of the sport at schools level.

Wynberg Headmasters Message:

Peter van Schalkwyk, WBHS Deputy Headmaster and the man behind the first edition of this festival format back in 2006 writes:

“While always a delight to watch WBHS 1st XV deliver the wins, this weekend against St Charles and Worcester Gym, the visitors came prepared to push the hosts hard throughout.

Parel Vallei ran their more fancied opponents SACS to a very tight game on Friday losing by only 2 points. In the big match on Saturday, Rondebosch managed to reverse last year’s defeat to Oakdale in a very tightly contested match in wet conditions.

U13s teams from WBJS, Hamiltons RC, Bastion Primary and SSDP dished up some great U13 rugby.”
