Hockey

Eleven hockey teams took on Michaelhouse over the weekend. The 14A side continued their excellent season with an excellent 3-2 win, while the 1st XI was held to a tight 2-2 draw after some spectacular hockey! College also won three of their four filler games against St Charles, and drew one.

1st XI report (1st XI coach and Hockey Director, Mr Mark Sanders)

Up against a determined Michaelhouse side on their Reunion Day, Maritzburg College’s 1st XI started their match against off well and looked ready for the challenge. The first quarter was reminiscent of two heavyweight boxers battling it out in the ring, with both teams keen to stamp their authority on the game.

Michaelhouse won a penalty corner and scored to go 1-0 up with a well-worked variation that had not been seen yet this season. College replied with an attacking brand of hockey and created multiple opportunities. The boys pressed well and turned over the ball in midfield and with three passes going forward, Kaden Jenkins set up in the right of the circle and struck the ball low left to level the scores.

The second half was much the same, and College controlled much of the game in their usual mature brand of hockey. A momentary lapse in concentration lead to an unnecessary turnover allowing the Michaelhouse forward into the circle, who got a shot off and scored a good goal to go 2-1 up. College continued to play a very attacking brand of hockey creating many circle entries and eventually won a penalty corner. The push and trap were not completed and set up a loose open style of play which Siwa Sithembu slapped the ball passed the goalkeeper to level the scores. Although the game ended in a 2-2 draw, the game was a wonderful spectacle of schoolboy hockey.

1st XV report (1st XV coach, Mr Nico Breedt)

College had the honour of being hosted by Michaelhouse for their Reunion Day celebrations 2025, and the 1st XV knew that winning would not be easy!

College produced one of their most clinical first half performances to date. They scored the opening converted try and continued applying pressure, leading at one stage 17-0. Michaelhouse opened the account with a maul try, with only a minute and a half to go before half time, although they were unable to convert. Score at the break was 17-5.

Three minutes into the second half, Michaelhouse scored their second try of the match. Resolute defence from both teams resulted in an unchanged score board for the next 10minutes. College’s

intensity remained unwavering and finally scored their first try of the second half, with yet another successful conversion, but Michaelhouse almost immediately struck back with a beautiful try in the corner. The conversion was unsuccessful, and with six and half minutes to go the hosts added another three points to the score board, narrowing the gap to 24-18.

There was a sense of inevitability of an infamous Michaelhouse come back and the stage couldn’t be set more dramatically. College masterfully retained possession for the closing minutes and scored their fourth and final try of the match. Two minutes to go College were now leading 31-18.

With time up on the clock, Michaelhouse was rewarded with a penalty which they converted into a 7 point driving maul try. Final score 31-25; a well-deserved victory by Maritzburg College and just reward for their commitment and hard work, with a result they can be very proud of.
