Kearsney v Westville Boys High 2-2

Kearsney and Westville Boys’ High renewed their traditional Highway derby, with WBHS confident after having won their encounter earlier this season. The atmosphere was electric and both teams were committed to playing an exciting football from the first whistle.

Kearsney started the game well when the referee awarded the hosts a penalty for an infringement in the penalty area. Kearsney captain Sipho Majiza, playing his final game on the Stott, put his side 1-0 up.

Liam Oets was a danger for the visitors, finding himself one on one with the Westville keeper just before the half, but being denied a goal by a brilliant save.

Westville managed to reply early on in the second half, drawing level through the boot of Kwenama Hlubi. The game seemed to go up another gear as it headed into the final 20 minutes. Kearsney were able to rotate the ball through the lines, charging up the left wing and swinging a cross into a dangerous area, Kaydon Mulder was able to find a powerful header and give the home side the lead again.

Westville needed to chase the game, and saw their reward after putting pressure on the hosts. Kearsney were now down to 10 men for the last few minutes of an incredibly competitive fixture.

Westville captain Joel Munemo snatched a chance late on and managed to get his side back level.

Kearsney continued to push for a late winner and, with little time left, saw the ball nestle in the back of the net. In a late drama, the referee disallowed the goal, deciding a foul was committed in the build-up.

The game ended 2-2 in a brilliant display for high school football.
