The Curro Halala Cup burst into action yesterday with hundreds of supporters witnessing the opening day of South Africa’s premier youth football tournament. Sixteen teams from across eight provinces delivered thrilling performances as the round-robin stage got underway at HeronBridge College.

The tournament brings together talented young footballers in a four-day celebration of skill, resilience, and community spirit. Beyond displaying exceptional football, the Curro Halala Cup provides a platform for South Africa’s youth to build confidence and believe in their potential.

The day kicked off with Curro CEO, Cobus Loubser, addressing a packed stadium during the official opening ceremony, where he reiterated Curro’s unwavering support for football development at school level. He also highlighted Curro’s ongoing commitment to the Halala Cup and the vision of establishing the tournament as one of South Africa’s premier sporting events.

A total of 28 goals were scored across two rounds of round-robin matches, setting the tone for an exciting weekend ahead. With good weather forecast, organisers and fans alike are looking forward to three more thrilling days of football.

Day 1 Highlights

Opening fixtures delivered intense competition as teams began their quest for glory. The 16 participating schools, divided into four pools, kicked off their three-match round-robin campaigns with passion and determination on display throughout the day. With some teams displaying moments of brilliance that hinted at the talent on show throughout the tournament.

Teams representing the Western Cape, Free State, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, and Eastern Cape all made their mark, setting the stage for an exciting tournament ahead.

Over the next three days, teams will complete their pool matches before the top two from each group advance to the Cup knockout stages. The remaining teams will compete in the Plate competition, ensuring every school has meaningful matches throughout the tournament.
