Paul Roos Gym Crowned No. 1 in Final 2024 School Rugby Rankings After Epic Season
After thousands of school rugby matches played across the country in 2024, it all came down to the most anticipated showdown of the year: Paul Roos Gym vs. Grey College. The stakes couldn’t have been higher as these two powerhouse teams faced off to determine who would claim the coveted No. 1 spot on the SA School Sports First XV School Rugby Rankings.
Paul Roos Gym, unbeaten and leading the rankings for weeks, entered the match with confidence—and they didn’t disappoint. In a performance that stunned many, PRG dominated Grey College from start to finish. By halftime, PRG had surged ahead 14-3, thanks to tries from hooker Altaus Rabie and Samuel Badenhorst. The second half saw PRG tighten their grip on the game, holding Grey scoreless and securing a resounding 36-3 victory. With this commanding win, Paul Roos Gym solidified their status as the No. 1 ranked team in the country for 2024.
The 2024 season has been nothing short of extraordinary, filled with surprising upsets and unforgettable moments. Jeppe delivered a shock earlier in the year by defeating Grey College, and DHS followed suit by toppling Jeppe, proving that on any given day, any top team could rise to the occasion. But with 15 consecutive wins against some of the toughest opponents in South Africa, Paul Roos Gym has undeniably earned their place at the top.
We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this season so special. To the coaches who strategized, the parents who supported, and the players who left it all on the field—you are the heartbeat of school rugby, and this season will be remembered for years to come. Now in its 19th year of generating the SA School Sports school rugby rankings we are amazed how the interest just keep growing!
As we close the chapter on an incredible 2024, we look forward to what 2025 has in store. Until then, keep the spirit of rugby alive and thriving!
