Wynberg Boys’ High School has appointed former Western Province and Stormers scrumhalf, Nic Groom as their new Director of Rugby.
Nic replaces Craig Childs who has taken up a coaching position with WP Rugby after 6 years as Director of Rugby at Wynberg.
Nic has been working closely with Craig at UCT with the Varsity Cup side, and will carry on that extramural work through to April. Nic will phase in from 1 February officially, but he is already becoming a familiar face around pre-season conditioning and gym programmes.
Nic Groom brings a wealth of experience to the job having played in over 200 provincial and first division matches in most parts of the rugby world. Starting his rugby career with Western Province and the Stormers, Groom went on with his career in the UK playing for Northampton Saints, Edinburgh Rugby and London Irish where he competed in the Heineken Champions Cup, Gallagher Premiership and Guinness Pro 14 competitions.
In 2016, Groom knocked loudly on the Springboks door and was included in the South Africa squad for their 3 match test series about Ireland but was selected to play for the South Africa “A” team against a touring England Saxons team.
After retiring from top class rugby at the end of 2021, Nic Groom launched his coaching career by assisting the University of Cape Town in the Varsity Cup before taking up the post at Wynberg Boys’ High.
Nic is committed to taking Wynberg rugby to the top of schoolboy rugby and mentioned that “It’s a great honour to be involved with Wynberg and I’m really looking forward to getting started and adding to what is already an incredibly successful rugby programme.”
