Graeme squad put in the hard yards for annual rugby festival.

With less than a month to go, Graeme College’s first team squad are in full preparation mode for the annual Graeme College Rugby Festival, where they’ll face Brandwag and St John’s College in Makhanda from March 20 to 22.

A Festival with Strong Roots

Since its inception over two decades ago by former first team coach Nico van der Meulen, the festival has grown into a key fixture on the Eastern Province rugby calendar.

Initially a single-day season opener, it has evolved into a three-day festival, with some teams playing two matches while others compete in just one.

Current Graeme first team coach Jonty van der Meulen says the event is now much more than just a pre-season fine-tuning opportunity.

“Nowadays, most teams will have already played one or two matches before the festival, so it’s become a real platform to set the tone for the second term of school rugby,” he explained.

Squad in Full Training Mode

Graeme’s squad are deep into their training, alternating between on-field sessions and gym workouts. Van der Meulen is optimistic about the team’s prospects, especially in the forward pack.

“This year, we have six returning forwards, which is a big advantage. Last year, we struggled in that area because our pack was quite young,” he said.

“One of those players is currently injured, but overall, their experience from last season will be crucial in handling the physical demands of first-team rugby.”

Balancing this seasoned forward line is a dynamic but relatively young backline. Three of the players were part of the national U16 training camp in Stellenbosch last year.

“We don’t yet know how they’ll transition to first-team rugby as they’re still young, but their talent is undeniable. It’s exciting to have them in the mix,” Van der Meulen noted.

Graeme will need to be sharp in all areas, with two strong opponents ahead.

“Brandwag will have their traditional power up front, with some big boys in their team. But they’ve also added an X-factor to their backline, making them a well-rounded side. We’ll have to match them up front to create opportunities for our backs,” Van der Meulen said.

On the other hand, St John’s College present a different kind of challenge.

“They focus on smart, structured rugby, doing the basics exceptionally well. It’s a style that contrasts with the schoolboy rugby we’re used to in the Eastern Cape, so we’ll need to handle the pressure they bring with their disciplined, error-free play.”

Tough Opposition Awaits

Graeme’s connection with St John’s stems from their participation in the St John’s Easter Festival in Johannesburg.

“We’ve built a good relationship with them, and they were keen to join our festival. It’s great to bring in a different style of rugby to complement the strong Eastern Cape teams that traditionally take part,” Van der Meulen added.

With training intensifying and excitement building, Graeme College are ready for a thrilling showdown on their home turf.
