With winter sport trials underway, it was a quieter competitive weekend for Maritzburg College. Nonetheless, our athletes, cyclists, squash players, swimmers and golfers delivered outstanding performances across a range of fixtures and events.
ATHLETICS: KZN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Maritzburg College was proudly represented by three athletes at the KZN Athletics Championships, with standout achievements across the track:
- Mhlongo claimed gold in the U19 100m and followed it with a bronze in the U19 200m — an exceptional double-medal performance.
- Ismail finished 4th in the U17 800m, delivering a strong and competitive race.
- Makhoba placed 7th in the U17 3000m, rounding off a commendable showing from the College contingent.
GOLF
In last week’s golf fixtures against Hilton, the Maritzburg College 1st team secured an emphatic 5–1 victory, demonstrating composure and quality on the course. The 2nd team fought hard but were edged out 2–4 in a closely contested matchup.
CYCLING
The College cycling team took part in the second provincial XCO event of the season, producing a series of impressive results:
- Searle claimed a superb silver medal in the Junior Men category.
- Fourie delivered a strong performance to finish 4th, with C. Wood taking 8th place.
- In the Sub-Junior Men division, Cunningham secured a respectable 18th position.
SQUASH
Up against long-time rivals Glenwood, the Maritzburg College 1st team powered to a flawless 10–0 victory. A superb team effort and a testament to the squad’s depth and determination.
SWIMMING
Competing against strong swimmers from leading local private and public schools, Maritzburg College placed 4th at the Top Ten Gala. The team finished just three points behind Northwood (3rd), with DHS taking 2nd and Westville securing 1st place. A tightly contested event and a proud result for our swimmers.
