Overview Sporting Achievements,
The weekend saw the start of summer fixtures with Maritzburg College’s cricket, basketball And water polo teams playing fixtures, mostly away against Kearsney and Northwood. College’s first XI cricket team played an Old Boys’ team and defeated them by 23 runs.
Cricket The 1st XI friendly match against the Old Boys’ team saw the boys win, scoring 115 runs before bowling their opposition out for 92 runs. College 12 cricket teams played against Kearsney and Northwood, winning five of their matches and losing four. Four games had to be abandoned due to rain.
Basketball
The College basketball teams were very evenly matched in their encounter against Kearsney. College won nine of their 19 matches, losing nine and drawing one. The 1st team enjoyed a comfortable 67-39 win.
1st team report (Mr Suwi Siwila – Director of Basketball)
The season got off to a good start for the Basketball programme at Maritzburg College. Playing a very determined and admired Kearsney team, it was nerves all round. After a day of tightly contested games and amazing Basketball display on the court the 1st team game got off to a flyer. From the onset College took the lead and never looked back. The 1st team put on a solid performance with a mixture of flair and pose. The final score 67 – 39.
Water polo
College’s water polo teams were outclassed on Saturday losing all their matches to strong Kearsney opposition. There were plenty of good lessons learned in the pool with the 1st team going down 4-20.
1st team report (Mr Darren Sherriff – 1st XI coach)
The 1st water polo team travelled to Kearsney over the weekend and the fixture started off well with both teams being in a tight first chukka. The score was 2-3 to Kearsney. Kearsney showed their strength and ability and took a good lead after the 2nd chukka. It was all Keasrney for the remainder of the game as they won comfortably 4-20.
