The weekend saw friendly preseason rugby fixtures hosted at Maritzburg College against Helpmekaar in the main, as well as the first round of hockey fixtures played away against Clifton.

Congratulations to College’s Deputy Headmaster: Co-curricular, Mr Gilbert de Villiers, on his appointment as SA Schools U18A Boys Assistant Hockey Coach for 2026.

Four of College’s water polo players took part in the SA U16 Boys Water Polo trials in Durban last week, A Ash, C Mackay-Leslie, C van der Merwe and C Barnard. Congratulations to Mackay-Leslie and Barnard who were in the winning team.

Hockey

Maritzburg College delivered an exceptional set of hockey performances against Clifton, Howick, and St Charles over the weekend of 13–14 March 2026, Against Clifton, College secured 11 wins, 1 draw, and no losses across 12 fixtures. The results underscored the depth, discipline, and tactical maturity present across all age groups, culminating in an impressive goal difference of +54.

The 1st XI delivered a hard-fought 2–2 draw in a tightly contested match while the 2nd, 3rd and 4th teams won their matches 3–0, 3–0, and 4–0 respectively.

Across all teams, the players demonstrated skill, commitment, and teamwork, representing the College badge with pride.

Rugby

The weekend saw players, staff and supporters from Helpmekaar Kollege travel to College for a day of friendly preseason warm-up rugby fixtures. With 28 rugby teams enjoying early-season run-outs, there were also filler games against Kearsney, Howick High, Westville, Edendale Technical, and Phayiphini High.

We look forward to an exciting winter season ahead with plenty of hockey and rugby action.
