Maris Stella is an independent, all girls’ school in Durban, focused on empowering young women with the tools to become resilient and self-assured global citizens. As a Holy Family Catholic School, our holistic education is faith-based, with a strong family-centred approach. We offer a caring and enriching place for girls to grow and learn, enabling them to find their own path, voice and purpose. In building confidence, instilling a sense of sisterhood and encouraging excellence in all aspects of school and community life, our girls are well positioned to identify and navigate new opportunities in an ever-changing, complex and challenging world.
Since 1996, our Grade 12 pupils have written the IEB (Independent Examination Board) National Senior Certificate Examination, producing exceptional results. A 100% pass rate, including a good spread of A aggregates and subject distinctions, reflects the high standard of academics at Maris Stella. Pupils are encouraged to take part in Subject Olympiads and other extension programmes. Academic excursions, throughout all phases, enhance and enrich our academic curriculum.
Maris Stella adopts a professional, spirited, and committed approach to our sporting programme. Our teams compete at the highest levels, participating with full commitment and showcasing the team spirit for which Maris Stella is renowned. Our staff and coaches are specialists in their particular sporting codes, and we offer a wide range of activities to cater for different levels of ability and performance.
Maris Stella has excellent extramural facilities. Our magnificent Multi-Purpose Centre (MPC) is used for Indoor Hockey, Action Netball, Physical Education lessons and a host of other activities. We have a beautiful swimming pool, 3 Tennis courts, 3 Netball courts, and a shared Astroturf with Durban High School.
The pupils at Maris Stella enjoy a rich variety of Music, Art and Drama, both within and outside of the classroom. Our High School Drama Department not only produces excellent Matric results, but also an annual professional production, which showcases the musical and dramatic talent at Maris Stella. Our Senior Primary and Junior Primary pupils also take the stage each year in their own drama productions. Our choirs participate in a variety of competitions and festivals, and private tuition is available for several musical instruments.
The culture of excellence extends to Public Speaking. We participate in the Durban Coastal Debating League and enter a variety of Public Speaking competitions. Toastmasters is offered to our Grade 11 pupils and is a valuable platform for developing life skills and confidence. A number of our pupils are members of the Durban Youth Council.
