Kearsney College Sports round up: BASKETBALL

Kearsney easily overpowered Glenwood, in a game where they dominated from the jump ball. The visitors struggled to score, and Kearsney took advantage of the lack of defense, scoring a consistent 20 points in the first two quarters, whilst holding the visitors to single points each quarter, to take the scoreboard to 40-13.

When the teams returned to the court after half-time, Kearsney carried on from where they had left off, scoring 30 points in the third quarter. It appeared that Glenwood had all but given up, even though they managed to more than double their half-time score.

The clock was run in the fourth quarter to end the game quicker, which helped reduce the final score to 87-30.

Glenwood won

On Saturday Kearsney won what they thought was an important toss, after a few days of rain where the pitch was under covers, and opted to put visitors Glenwood in to bat.

Once again, Kearsney’s bowlers performed exceptionally well. Michael Groom and Litha Gonya both struck early and Glenwood were always under pressure. Kreean Juggo stood out with the bat, scoring 31. Rivan Moodley continued his fine bowling form with figures of 4 for 15 in his 6 overs and Nicholas Comrie also chipped in with 2 wickets. Glenwood were dismissed for 83 in 25 overs.

However, Glenwood knew batting conditions were difficult and they exerted immense pressure on the young Kearsney batting lineup. Kyle Bryan opened the bowling with his off spin and ended up taking six wickets for 19 in his allotted overs. Akhil Maharaj backed him up, taking 3 for 14 in 5.2 overs. Cole Young was only the second player to reach double figures in the match, making 22 from 23 balls. Once he departed it was a procession for the hosts, and they were bowled out for 47.

This is the second time Glenwood’s spin attack has decimated a batting innings after they bowled Hilton out for 43 two weeks ago.
