CRICKET

Kearsney College enjoyed an excellent week (21-25 February) at the Independent Schools Cricket Festival at St Alban’s College in Pretoria. Despite facing stern opposition, they won three of the four games played, producing commendable performances against some of the county’s best private schools.

Kearsney’s standout player of the week was Ross Coetzee who produced two fifties and a fifer.

Highlight of the week was undoubtedly the comfortable win against the powerful St Stithians side which boasted two U19 World Cup players. This is one of the most prestigious weeks in the cricketing calendar and Kearsney’s success at this festival speaks volumes of a team which has shown real promise during the season.

Kearsney travelled to Michaelhouse to play in a triangular against Michaelhouse and Hilton at the weekend. They beat Michaelhouse 18-11 and drew with Hilton 10-10.

Playing against a new Michaelhouse team with a new coach, the 1st team game started level, with one for one goal-scoring. Kearsney’s depth allowed them to start to outplay Michaelhouse, and they pulled away towards the end of the 3rd chukka. The game ended with an 18-11 win to Kearsney.

The last Kearsney-Hilton encounter ended with a 14-14 draw. Saturday’s game started slowly for Kearsney, who had already played one game, putting them on the back foot, to end 2-4 down at the end of the 1st chukka. They were then able to pull back, to be down 4-5 at the end of the 2nd and 9-7 ahead at the end of the 3rd chukka. In the final chukka, Hilton scored in the last 15 seconds, to end the game level at 10-10.
