Girls T20 Festival Highlights held at Reddam Constantia

On a hot and blustery February weekend, 78 cricketers descended on the Reddam House Constantia campus for their inaugural Girls’ T20 Festival. Schools from Cape Town and Gqeberha went head-to-head for bragging rights and fierce competition ensued.

Day 1 saw the hosts, Reddam, take on both GQ-based sides and two commanding displays of batting saw them come out on top on both occasions, beating Collegiate and Pearson by 10 and 8 wickets respectively. Collegiate rallied in their afternoon encounter with Curro Durbanville to secure a 4-wicket win, while in the battle of Bellville, Stellenberg romped home to a convincing 90-run win over DF Malan.

Stellenberg got day 2 underway with another impressive win, this time over Reddam. Chasing 151 for victory, an opening stand of 118 made the victory all but assured. A late fight back by the hosts only served to delay the inevitable as Stellenberg eased to a 7-wicket win.

Pearson enjoyed a successful pair of matches on day 2, dispatching Curro Durbanville and DF Malan, while their local rivals Collegiate struggled to get going, losing out to Stellenberg and DF Malan. Reddam bounced back from the disappointing morning result, taking their collective frustration out on Curro Durbanville. Having restricted the visitors to 103 in their 20 overs, the hosts were in no mood to hang around, racing past the target in 7 overs.

On day 3, DF Malan picked up their second win of the festival, beating Curro by 10 wickets and Stellenberg looked to make it a full house of wins when they took on Pearson.

The Stellenberg batters couldn’t repeat their heroics of the previous day and their innings failed to gain any sort of momentum with their total of 134 looking short of par. And so it proved, with Pearson pacing their innings well to run out comfortable winners by 7 wickets.

All 12 matches saw their fair share of high-quality skills, highlighting the significant growth of girls’ cricket in recent years. The players all pushed their limits and embraced the opportunity to test their abilities against strong opposition. A huge thank you to the players, coaches, officials, and supporters who made this festival a success. Your energy and passion contributed to an unforgettable weekend of cricket. We look forward to building on this momentum and seeing even greater things for girls’ cricket in the years to come!

Congratulations to Emma Tinley from Pearson  who scored 100* off 73 balls against Curro Durbanville.
