The 2022 school rugby season is just about finished and for most teams, last week was their final match after a long season.
All Grey College needed to do to secure the No.1 spot for 2022 was to win their match against Paul Roos Gym. It seemed a simple task on paper, after all PRG had lost several matches during the season and for the most part looked underdone in some of their bigger matches.
SA School Sports Inbox Flooded
However, with all the SA U18 players missing from both sides, the playing fields were levelled, and Paul Roos Gym turned on the pressure from the start and although it may be painful for the Grey faithful to hear, were completely outplayed.
Now in the weeks preceding this match, the SA School Sports inbox had been flooded with emails from Grey supporters denouncing the rankings formula and demanding that Grey College should be No.1. They argued that ‘other rankings’ (are there really any other credible rankings?) had Grey at No. 1 and that “proved” that our formula was nonsense. We even had ex-Springbok players exerting their influence!
Well having published the rankings for the past 15 years, we play the long game at SA School Sports and we trust the formula. Paul Roos Gym beat Grey College convincingly and having also lost to Paarl Gim they remain in second spot for 2022.
Trusting the Rankings Formula
It is true that Paarl Gim also lost matches during the season, so did all the leading teams. However, the ranking formula is not a win/loss ratio kind of formula. It takes into consideration the Strength of the opposition played, Home and Away status of the matches, Margin of Victory, Margin of Defeat, Actual results, and others.
Taking all the factors into consideration Paarl Gim are No.1 for 2022, after all they did beat Grey College. The combined margin of defeat for their 3 losses totals only 7 points which serves to illustrate just how close they came to an unbeaten season.
It has been perhaps the closest season since we started publishing the rankings back in 2007. On paper one can use formulas to try to generate a picture of the overall form of a team however as Paul Roos Gym showed, on the day any of the top teams can beat any of the other others.
With the season almost over, please send through your outstanding results to editor@saschoolsports.co.za for our final 2022 rankings next week.
To the coaches, for all the questions and emails and support we thank you. To the players well done for providing such a smorgasbord of entertainment! And to the literally tens of thousands who studied the rankings each week, we value your interest and support. Here’s to a great 2023 season!
