Cricket news from St Andrew’s College
The St Andrew’s College Stayers Cricket XI played in their first round SA20 knockout fixture against Kingswood College on City Lords on Friday evening.
The College XI batted first and Rhys Wiblin and William Beamish got the team off to a positive start with a half century opening partnership. Two quick wickets put the brakes on the scoring as the Kingswood spinners kept it tight. Beamish went on to score a well-played half century before holing out at square leg. College lost momentum as the boundaries dried up but posted a competitive 141/4 in their allotted 20 overs.
Kingswood were slow to get going and were pegged back by the St Andrew’s College spinners. Benjamin Coventry and Tom Bussiahn picked up two wickets apiece. The seamers were solid and bowled with good discipline. Kingswood ended on 123/7, College winning by 18 runs.

Other half centuries were scored by captain Murray Wilson and Oliver Johns. After their allotted overs College had reached an imposing 364/7, needing 5 quick wickets for an outright win.
This they achieved with 3 overs of the game remaining, Union High School finishing on 33/5.

CAPE SCHOOLS CRICKET FESTIVAL – Day 2 match report
The St Andrew’s College 1st XI’s second match of the Cape Schools Cricket Festival against SACS ended in a draw late yesterday afternoon.
SACS won the toss and got off to a quiet start with the bat. Joe Wostenholm led the College attack with a fantastic spell of swing bowling, picking up an early wicket. By the first tea break SACS had consolidated and set themselves up well for the session to lunch. The College bowlers did well to pick up a number of quick wickets after the tea break to peg SACS back again. SACS changed their game plan and started to attack the College spinners. By lunch SACS were 7 down with a max of 7 overs left to bat.
After lunch College bowled well and bowled SACS out for 280, leaving them 53 overs to chase the score down.
A solid start by William Beamish and Rhys Wiblin saw them to 30 without loss. A series of soft dismissals then put pressure on the College middle/lower order but an aggressive knock of 60 from Mark Were and some sensible batting from Laurie Apps meant that College went into the last 6 overs with four wickets in hand. A flurry of wickets at the death, as the sun set and darkness set in, meant that it was left to Joe Wostenholm and Roman van Zyl to see out the day, College finishing on 203/9. Joe Wostenholm was the pick of the College bowlers with 3/54
