In a stunning display of cricketing prowess, Paarl Boys High pulled off a major upset, defeating the 2024 top-ranked Wynberg team in a closely contested match.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Paarl Boys High found themselves in a precarious position, struggling to build a substantial score against the formidable Wynberg bowlers. However, solid contributions from Neil Louw (49), Pieter Gildenhuys (45), and Brent Goosen (28) helped them post a respectable total of 168 all out in 49 overs. Fawaaz Hendricks was the pick of the Wynberg bowlers claiming 4/32 as he cleaned up the tail.
Wynberg who have already enjoyed good wins against the likes of Bishops, Affies and St Stithians would have been confident of being able to chase down the target. However the Boishaai bowlers had other ideas.
Facing the modest target, Wynberg’s batting order crumbled under the pressure of a disciplined Paarl Boys High bowling attack. Ra-eez Isaacs removed the two Wynberg openers before they had reached double figures and along with Aden Batt (3/45) wreaked havoc. While Christian van Zuydam (2/20) provided crucial support, restricting Wynberg to a meager 129 all out in 56.3 overs.
The 39-run victory sends a message through the school cricketing world, highlighting Paarl Boys High’s resilience and determination and proving that on their day even the most formidable opponents can be toppled with skillful execution and unwavering belief.
