Sports News from St Charles of their weekend games.
Football
St Charles College hosted Kearsney College in the final spring football fixture of the year. It was the hosts who started the better of the two teams, as they were finding space in the outside channel of Kearsney’s defence. The final passes and crosses lacked quality, and Kearsney was growing into the game by creating opportunities as the first half closed.
At the interval the referee had words with both captains to calm down and speak to their players as too many yellow cards had been given. The second half started with the visitors quickly finding their rhythm and had a couple of half-chances on goal. With the match opening up, both teams were searching for a winner. St Charles College made three positive substitutes, and the pendulum swung in favour of the home team. Mlambo missed narrowly with a one-on-one with the keeper with 15 minutes to go, then substitute Alckmin Simone hit the crossbar with 7 minutes to go. However, Simone had the final say when he picked up the ball outside the big box and his shot took a deflection and went in.
St Charles College were 1-0 winners on Harwin Road which saw an unbeaten season for their 1st XI on the recently newly relocated Home of Football.
Saints Golf
The St Charles College annual golf tour and Championships took place at the manicured Bosch Hoek Golf Club and Lodge on the weekend. With three provincial golfers amongst the top 16 it was a weekend of top golf, with local lad, Mitchell Hansen, taking top honours shooting 74, and matriculant Haden Mcleod winning the playoff for second against upcoming star, Kaleb McNally who was third. Thank you to Bosch Hoek for hosting the Blue and Gold golf team!
