Overview Sporting Achievements

Heading towards the end of the 2nd term, College’s hockey, soccer, volleyball, canoeing and cross- country teams were action and recorded very good results over the weekend.

Hockey

With six hockey teams in action against Clifton, playing at home on Pape’s, College recorded five wins and one draw with an excellent positive goal difference of 19.

1st XI report (1st XI coach and Hockey Director, Mr Mark Sanders)

Maritzburg College welcomed Clifton College to Pape’s for the last game of the second term. College started off the slower of the two teams, with Clifton looking determined and pressing with purpose. College was able to keep possession and create a few opportunities, but it was Clifton who were able to turn over the ball, closing down potential threats and creating a counterattack with a shot at goal to go 1-0.

College went into the second half chasing an equalizer. Clifton’s resolute defense made it difficult for College to score and the fourth and final quarter would require the Red Black White to change tactics. The equalizer came from Uyanda Dlamini through open play, and in the final five minutes College were hunting the win. With a final push forward, the ball was played into Clifton’s circle where Rory Schirge got his stick down for a deflection goal in the bottom left-hand corner. College won the game 2-1. Congratulations to both teams on a hard-fought game.

The final was a tense affair. Maritzburg College started strongly in the first set but narrowly lost 22– 25  The second set saw them lead 12–3 and later 24–22, but Northwood showed their composure and quality, edging the set 26–24 to claim a 2–0 victory and the championship.
