Maritzburg College Sports report for the weekend saw the return to summer sport with basketball, cricket and water polo fixtures against Northwood. College’s 1st XI cricket team competed in a T20 tournament in Harare.
Cricket
1st XI tour to Harare
The Maritzburg College 1st XI travelled to Zimbabwe for a T20 tournament. In the opening pool matches they were up against Prince Edward, Christian Brothers College (CBC) and St John’s College.
Maritzburg College won their first match against Prince Edward by 75 runs. Batting first, they scored 185/3 with da Costa top scoring at 75, and Chad Mason making 68 not out. College bowled Prince Edward out for 110, with Mason taking 5/21 and Pembridge 3/20. The match was also marked by two of the players receiving caps for their first match at 1st team level; Joseph Currie and Reece Willson.
College also won their pool match against CBC by nine wickets. They contained their opponents to 116/9, Mason taking 4 for 36 and da Costa 2 for 15. College’s batsmen quickly raced to 117/1 with Daniel Nadasan not out on 32 and Mason not out on 30. The 3rd pool match was against hosts St John’s College and saw College lose by 26 runs.
College was up against Falcon College in the quarter finals eliminator playoff and secured an excellent win, scoring 200/4 with Gibson producing a superb 97. Falcon reached 172/5 in their 20 overs giving College the win by 28 runs. Up against Kearsney in the semi-final College unfortunately lost and finished 4th overall. Congratulations to Mason, who was awarded Most Valuable Player of the tournament, with excellent batting and bowling performances.
Cricket vs Northwood
It was a disappointing start to summer sport for the other cricket teams, who took on Northwood
over the weekend, securing only two wins and one draw, and losing their other matches.

Basketball
College had the upper hand in the basketball against Northwood, winning 12 of their games, although the 1st team match had to be abandoned due to the weather. Well done to our U14 teams who produced an exceptional set of results winning all their games.

Water polo
Northwood proved the stronger in the pool with College only winning one water polo game and drawing one. A big shout out to the U14B team who had an excellent game winning 8-4.
1st team report (Mr Darren Sherriff, Director Aquatics)
On the weekend College travelled to Northwood for the first fixture on the summer season. It was a tough encounter with the 1st team missing three regular players. The game started off well and scores were tight in the 1st chukka. Unfortunately for College, the remainder of the game was a dominant display from the Northwood team, and they won convincingly 6-16.
Ian Melliar Cup
College’s U15A team travelled down to Wynberg to take part in the Ian Melliar Cup. Up against strong competition, the event was a good learning experience for the boys, who won one match, but unfortunately lost the other seven.
