Maritzburg College Sports achievements over the past week:

They successfully reclaimed the Cowie Cup after beating Port Shepstone 2-0 on Friday! Congratulations to our 1st XI who are enjoying a great season and are currently ranked number 1 in the country.

Congratulations to the College 1st XI cricket team who are through to the final of the Eston One Insurance T20 Night League, after beating Hilton College.

Soccer

On Friday, Maritzburg College’s 1st XI successfully reclaimed the Cowie Cup, winning 2-0 against Port Shepstone. College also took on local rivals St Charles in a full round of soccer fixtures over the weekend, winning 11 of their 17 games.

1st team report (Nic Haswell, MIC Soccer)

On Friday College played in the final of the Cowie Cup, which is the KZN Under 19 Knockout Cup versus Port Shepstone. The tournament started in July with 32 schools participating. College produced the following results en route to the final:

vs Glenwood, won 3-0 vs Kloof, won 4-0

Quarter Final vs Carter, won 4-2 Semi-Final vs Westville, won 1-0

The final versus Port Shepstone started as a tense affair, with College dominating possession but were unable to unlock a resolute Port Shepstone defence. Just as it started to look as though the final would head towards penalties, College increased their attacking intensity, and this produced two goals in the last ten minutes, from Mazithi Qasha and Philasande Khuzwayo, to seal the deal and see College crowned the Cup Champions for 2024.

Results against St Charles

U14A won 4-1, U14B won 2-1, U14C won 3-0, U14D won 6-0, U14E won 10-2

U15A lost 1-0, U15B won 3-1, U15C lost 5-1, U15D won 7-2

U16A won 3-0,U16B won 5-3,U16C lost 4-3, U16D won 6-2

4ths won 6-3, 3rds lost 2-0, 2nds drew 1-1, 1sts lost 3-2

Cricket

Congratulations to the College 1st XI who are through to the final of the Eston One Insurance T20 Night League.

Midweek, College’s 1st XI took on Hilton College in the T20 semi-final up at Hilton. Hilton opened the batting and were restricted to 152/2. College replied with 155/7, with Mason scoring 41. It was an exciting finish to the match with College needing 2 runs off the last ball, and Dedekind hitting a 4, giving College the win by 3 wickets.

Cycling

On Saturday, the College Cycling Team travelled to Pretoria to participate in the PBHS 24 & 6 HOUR CHALLENGE 2024.

Team Red, with Kayden Searle, Daniel Janneker, Cole Baxter and Luvuyo Kubheka, won the 6-hour 4- man school team race with 27 laps of 5.17km. Team Black, with Ewan McAllister, Brynn Fourie, Kaden Leonard and Caden Wood, placed second in the 6-hour 4-man school team race completing 25 laps of

5.17km. Team White (a mixed parents and staff team), were hot on the heels of the youngsters and gave a fantastic account of the “ballies”!

The highlight of the event was partnering with the Hero777 Team who rode the 24-hour race; Billy Macleod, KG Johan Werner, Judy McKenna (Gauteng team), and Adithya Naidoo, Hlumisa Dlamuka, and Diego Rencken (College team). Well done to all the boys, parents and staff.
