Clifton 1st XV lost 0-48 to Kearsney College 1st XV

The past weekend’s rugby saw Clifton College hosting Kearsney College on a windy Saturday at Riverside in Durban North. First half possession and territory were dominated by Kearsney, capitalising by scoring four unanswered tries, to go into the half time break with a comfortable 28-0 lead.

The second half saw much of the same, with Kearsney having the majority of territory and possession. Even though the line-out struggled at times, Kearsney managed to score a further four tries, to take the final score of the game to 48-0.

The game was full of running rugby, with the scoreline showing that Kearsney managed to convert their possession into points. A notable performance came from Cameron Veenstra who scored 23 points on the day, including a hat-trick of tries.fever tree guesthouse

Clifton 1st X1 lost 0-3 to Kearsney 1st X1

Kearsney were hosted by a confident Clifton team on Saturday, but the visitors were still able to play out to a 3-0 win.

Kearsney negotiated a tricky first period against a rampant Clifton attack, coming out unscathed with a goal against the run of play by Bonga Maphanga. The hosts continued their domination in possession, but Kearsney managed to hold firm.

A revitalised team took to the pitch in the second chukka, as more possession allowed the Kearsney boys to put their mark on the game. Newly-promoted goalkeeper Spaso Curach was called open in the early stages of the second half, a calling he was equal to, allowing the scoreboard pressure to remain on the Clifton boys.

Matthew Mendes de Oliveira continued his impressive run of goal-scoring with a well-executed penalty corner, to take the game to a comfortable margin for Kearsney.

At 2-0 down, the hosts seemed to ramp up their efforts in the final period of play. In an effort to keep a clean sheet, Kearsney’s defense threw all their efforts into ensuring the ball stayed out of their net. With five minutes to go, Keegan de Jager took the game well and truly away from the hosts in a pin-point drag flick against his U16A KZN compatriot.

It was an impressive result for Kearsney, considering Clifton had taken down the Durban High School juggernauts earlier in the week.
