1st XI Cricket Press Report vs Queens College (A)
The College 1st XI travelled to Queenstown on Saturday to play a vibrant Queens College team on a beautiful looking Queens campus.
An earlier morning shower meant the match format was changed to a 45 over match.
College won the toss and bowled well as a unit ensuring scoring was tough for the Queens batsmen on the moisture filled pitch. Skilled cricketer, Ryan Denston showcased his ball striking ability with a sparkling 45 runs and was well supported by Ross Fitzhenry with his patient 39 runs.
College maintained the pressure and Leg spinner, Laurie Apps made the most of the situation, picking up 7 superb wickets for just 19 runs, including 2 caught and bowled dismissals, a superb googly, and a ripping 10th wicket delivery from around the wicket to the left handed batsman Vijay George.
College’s chase in search of Queen’s 139 first innings total was not going to be an easy task. Queens picked up early wickets and will regret their missed opportunities when College were 66/3. In the end College scampered home to win by 6 wickets in the 28th over. Captain Murray Wilson played magnificently for College, his 56 runs coming off just 59 balls and Myles Sansom played the fluent supportive role securing College’s win with his 42 not out off 44 balls.
Thanks very much to Queens College for a superb day out and well done to all the cricketers for showing stamina and energy during the lengthy day of travel and sport.
BASKETBALL VS QUEENS COLLEGE
The St Andrew’s College Basketball Club embarked on an early morning journey to Komani to face off against Queens College in an exhilarating basketball matchup. The day unfolded beautifully with plenty of basketball action.
The St Andrew’s College Basketball Club showcased their skills and played engaging basketball games throughout the day. Despite facing tough competition, they performed admirably, only losing two games out of nine.
The concluding event was the highly anticipated 1st team game, which proved to be a hard-fought battle. Both teams pushed themselves to their limits, entertaining the viewers with their skill and determination. In the end, the St Andrew’s College 1st team emerged victorious, clinching a well-deserved win with a final score of 38-27.
We extend our gratitude to Queens College for their warm hospitality and for being exceptional hosts throughout the day. The camaraderie and sportsmanship displayed by both teams contributed to the success of the event.

Water Polo Report 8 -11 February 2023
We had a bustling weekend of water polo, and we extend our gratitude to Mr. Searle for orchestrating the thrilling internal league on Saturday. The Dolphins emerged triumphant, clinching the tournament victory and earning a well-deserved reward of pizzas.
U14 – Jason Murray Tournament:
Our U14 boys embarked on their first tournament of the year in East London. They kicked off with impressive wins against Paarl Boys and Merrifield but faced a narrow 3-2 defeat to Grey High on the opening day. Despite this setback, they rebounded by defeating Selborne U14B and advancing to the semi-finals, where they faced Selborne U14A and narrowly lost 3-1.
In the battle for 3rd and 4th position against Paarl Boys, they fought valiantly but unfortunately succumbed to a 4-3 loss, finishing in 4th place. This marks a promising start to the season, and we extend our best wishes as they head to Cape Town this weekend to compete in the Pitcairn Cup.
A special thank you to Coach Ben van der Hoven and Manager Nicola Verwey for their dedicated efforts in looking after the boys and making the weekend memorable for all.
2nd Team – Chukka Festival:
The St Andrews College 2nd team showcased their skills at the annual U19 Oakhill Chukka Festival, engaging in 7 highly competitive games against schools of varying abilities. Following a challenging Pearson 2nd team tournament the previous weekend, the team demonstrated resilience, finishing unbeaten with seven victories in Knysna.
Our appreciation goes to Mr. Mpho Hlongwane for coaching the team and Mrs. Paula Hinks, who efficiently managed the team for the weekend.
The weekend proved to be excellent for water polo, and all the boys thoroughly relished the experience.
