The first round of two-day games at the St David’s Marist Fasken Festival produced two results and four draws.

Paul Roos Gimnasium beat Noordheuwel by nine wickets. They bowled the Krugersdorp side out for under 150 twice, with Callum Appollis taking seven wickets over the two days and Dion Winkel getting 5/45 in the second innings, setting his side up to chase a low total of 68.

St John’s got the other victory. They set St Andrew’s of Bloemfontein a target of 243, and then bowled them out for 185.Dakalo Leketa did most of the damage with the ball for St John’s. He took nine wickets in the game, including 4/60 in the second innings.

In the other four games the captains of the sides batting second-last were all a bit over-cautious, batting on tool long and setting targets which were not realistic to chase. They were not helped by the conditions, though, with the wickets remaining pretty flat and lifeless for both days.

There were a number of good individual performances. Alexander Volschenk made 112 for Waterkloof against St Stithians, he hit 112 off 140 balls with seven fours and 6 sixes. And Pranav Raichetti of St Stithians converted his 57 against Waterkloof from day 1 into a 110 not out on Friday morning. His 110 not out came off 147 balls and included 11 fours and 3 sixes. Raicehetti then made 60 Saints’ 2nd knock in the afternoon.

The centurions from day one. Martitzburg College’s Liam Armstrong and Caleb Thomas, followed those performances up with big half centuries against St David’s on day two (76 and 60, respectively); Callum Ritchie of KES had a good day with bat and ball. He took 5/64 against the Lions Invitation team, and then got 70 in his sides’ failed run-chase; Shahzaad Perumal of Clifton got a fifer – 5/94 against Jeppe; and Reece Reddy of the hosts, St David’s contributed 85 to his side’s chase against Maritzburg College.

The batsmen are certainly on top so far. Apart from the two hundred there were a further 12 half centuries on day two and the Maritzburg College vs St David’s game produced a mammoth total of 1138 runs.
