As the 2023 school rugby season draws to a close, it’s that time of the year again when we eagerly unveil the SA School Sports Combined Rugby Rankings. In keeping with tradition, we amalgamate the rankings of U14, U15, U16, and the First XV teams to offer a holistic view of each school’s rugby program’s prowess.
What’s noteworthy is that these rankings don’t merely crown the school with a formidable First XV. Instead, they celebrate institutions that have excelled across all age groups. It’s a testament to the schools that prioritize the development of young talent and foster a culture of rugby excellence from the grassroots up.
Grey College once again reigns supreme as the Top Rugby School of 2023, showcasing their dominance with all age groups performing exceptionally well. However, the rankings reveal that success in school rugby goes beyond just having a powerhouse First XV. Some schools may boast a formidable senior squad however could fall short in nurturing talent at junior levels, leading to a lower combined ranking.
It’s important to remember that these rankings are not definitive predictors of match outcomes. Any team on any given day can stage an upset. That’s the beauty of school sports—unpredictable, thrilling, and full of surprises.
