Overview Sporting Achievements
Congratulations to Johnathan van Zyl, Maritzburg College 1st XI captain for 2022, who has been named for the South African men’s U19 team heading to Bangledesh from 3-18 July.
This week saw midweek rugby and hockey fixtures against Kearnsey, and Maritzburg College’s cross country, squash and volleyball teams continued to produce excellent results last week.
Hockey
College’s hockey teams played 12 matches, winning 8, drawing 1 and losing 3.
1st XI match report (Kyle Emerson, Coach)
Kearsney travelled to Papes as a mid week fixture, something we do not play often. It is sometimes difficult to turn it on after a long day of school. However, the 1st XI made their intentions clear at the start of the game and started at a blistering pace. The high press and ability to move the ball around the field with good connections made it difficult for Kearnsey to settle. College would open the scoring early in the first quarter with a penalty corner, when Asanda Khumalo flicked the ball past the ‘keeper. College would continue to turn Kearsney over high up the field and the constant pressure would earn them another penalty corner. Khumalo would make no mistake and doubled College’s lead with another drag flick to the other side of the goal.
In the second quarter Kearsney started to find some rhythm but after a College error they were able to attack down the left hand side of the field and were able to find a man free in the circle who got a good shot off to score and bring the deficit to one goal.
The second half saw a big momentum shift and the high press which Kearsney then played made it more difficult for College to move ball and this enabled them to create some more chances. College struggled to threaten the Kearsney goal but were able to still dominate territory and possession, however they could not get any outcomes from this. With five minutes to play before full time, Kearsney earned another penalty corner and this time, were able to flick it past Nic Holmes in goal to tie the scores. College would continue to try and find the winning goal and earned two penalty corners of full time. The first wave of Kearsney did a brilliant job in running both penalty corners down and stopping College form getting a shot off.
The match would end in a 2-2 draw and it was another frustrating afternoon for College where they would again see that they need to take opportunities that are presented to them and not allow a team to stay in the game.
The Rugby teams played 13 matches, winning 12 and drawing 1. College’s hockey teams played 12 matches, winning 8, drawing 1 and losing 3, while the soccer 1st XI won their match against Michaelhouse 6-1

It was a clean sweep against Kearsney, with College winning 12 of their 13 matches and drawing 1.
Soccer
It was an outstanding week for College’s senior soccer teams. The U16A won 3 – 0 versus Bechet, 2nds won 5 – 0 versus St Nicholas and the 1sts won 6 – 1 versus Michaelhouse.
Rugby Selections
The school is especially proud of the outstanding results for College following the Carven week rugby and Inland hockey provincial selections.
Maritzburg College is very proud to announce that we have six of our talented rugby players selected for the Craven Week team, with Mr Tim Orchard appointed as Assistant Coach. Five College rugby players were selected for the Sharks U17 Academy side, with Mr Kelvin Elder appointed as Assistant Coach.
Maritzburg College also had a further seven boys selected for the Sharks U16 teams, and 10 boys for the Sharks U15 teams – a total of 28 boys selected.

Hockey Inland Selections
Congratulations to the five talented 1st XI Maritzburg College hockey players selected for the Inland U18A team; N Holmes, K Dobeyn, I Mosupye, B Dlamini and P Dlamini.
A further eight players have been selected for the Inland U18B side:
R McKean, A Khumalo, A Zuma, U Dlamini, A Sithembu, S Ndlovu, J Konigkramer and B Brokensha
College dominated the U16 selections with an outstanding NINE boys selected for the Inland U16A team, and EIGHT for the Inland U16B!
