SOCCER

Kearsney College 1st X1 beat Kloof High 1st X1 4-3

This was a thrilling game of soccer between two upper Highway rivals. Kearsney striker James Gillespie opened the scoring when he struck a thunderous shot into the Kloof net, leaving the goalkeeper no chance to save.

Kloof replied immediately and equalised with the Kearsney defence still celebrating. Kearsney was given a corner and striker Nhlakanipho Ngubane rose above everyone in the crowded box to header the ball into the Kloof goal.

Once again, Kloof scored immediately after the restart, making the score 2-2. Cameron Veenstra then scored with a well-placed header, giving Kearsney the lead once again, only for Kloof to equalise.

With the score 3-3, both teams pushed for the winner; but Veenstra struck again to give Kearsney a 4-3 win in an extremely entertaining game of schoolboy soccer.

Kearsney College 1st X1 beat Clifton College 1st X1 1-0

The game began with both sides getting a feel for each other, passing the ball around, waiting for an opportunity to find a hole in the opposition’s defence. Kearsney striker Nlakanipho Ngubane ran on to a through ball and only had the Clifton keeper to beat, but he struck his shot wide of the goals; to take the score to 0-0 at the half-time break.

The second half began with Kearsney bombarding the Clifton goal with crosses and shots. The Clifton goalkeeper was on top form, preventing Kearsney from breaching it. Kearsney finally scored when Cameron Veenstra beat a Clifton defender wide on the left side of the field, and hit a well-placed shot into the far corner of the Clifton goal.

Clifton countered with a number of attacks while Kearsney’s defence stood solid, absorbing the pressure. The game ended 1-0 with Kearsney holding on to their one goal advantage.
