Soil Schools Football Cup

The inaugural schools tournament The Soil Schools Cup hosted by St Stithians kicked off on Wednesday the 10th August 2022 featuring 4 Gauteng-based high schools.

Hosts St Stithians College triumphed over Curro Linbro Park 2-1 where later the South African Schools Football champions Clapham High School was dominant over Yashiva College and won 5-0. The 2022 tournament ambassador Aaron “Mbazo” Mokoena is watching the games to produce the tournament’s team on Friday after the last game. The tournament is a round robin of 3 matches and today Clapham takes on Curro and host St Stithians play Yashiva College at 2pm and 4pm respectively.

“We have seen amazing potential for the future of Bafana Bafana in an environment dominated by rugby and believe that the more the schools play football, it will make our future prospects stronger. Whilst we see why  a well-drilled Clapham will represent South Africa in CAF Pan-African School Championship the gap can close quickly as more competitive events like The Soil School Cup grow the interest in football and schools begin to aspire to represent South Africa in the continent as a further sporting accolade” said Mbazo.

SuperSport Schools app is carrying the tournament daily and more news on SA Schools Sports website as our media partners whilst Danone, DSTV and Sneaker Shack have come on board with prizes as product sponsors. “We are truly privileged by being hosted at St Stithians aligned with their ambition to be a force in schools football in the coming years. Our tournament was born out of the need to increase football content in schools by bringing diverse schools to play together and also finding a football purpose in the schools’ sports calendar.

The presence of an all-time Bafana Bafana caps leader who captained the national team as well as being one of the few Africans to captain an English Premier League club when he was at Portsmouth has motivated the boys and looking forward to have  the girls competition as well next year” said Lucky Maduna, the tournament director.

The school that finishes on top of the group will be the winner and 11 players will be named the Team Of The Tournament 2022 at the end of day 3.
